The team at indie game studio Mishura Games has been through a lot in recent years. Their departure from former studio Limestone Games—where they worked on 2021’s Aeon Must Die!—was fraught with drama, including accusations of workplace misconduct (against Limestone) that ultimately led to litigation. It’s a messy situation that’s best fully described elsewhere, so for now we will instead look toward the future that is Mishura’s next game.

IMMORTAL: And the Death That Follows has been in the works for a while as a “Kungfu-noir prison drama,” which certainly sounds like a first in terms of video game sub-genre. Now a new Kickstarter campaign is right around the corner and the team has their sights set on a 2027 launch.

In IMMORTAL, players must build their own gang and plan a way to break free from Buddha’s prison. Some of the inspiration noted comes from the likes of Devil May Cry (combos), Hotline Miami (“kill or be killed” action) and Prince of Persia (platforming). Here’s more on the features:

• ESCAPE TO FREEDOM from Buddha’s prison comprising 25 cell blocks and plan your getaway by carefully choosing when to avoid or engage rival gangs and The Death That Follows.

• DECIDE THE FATE of 16 different Asura gang lords, each with their own personality, who can become your strongest ally or worst enemy depending on your choices and relationships.

• UNLOCK Fudo’s full Wisdom King with over 60 skills and abilities to aid in combat, exploring, and ultimately deciding the fate of you and your enemies. The skills are unique, made specifically to increase your options and skill ceiling, rather than provide passive buffs.

• ANSWER THE PRAYERS of mortals to gain over 40 powerful Boons to both aid you in combat and unlock new pathways, but be careful of Banes that provide new gameplay challenges to overcome as well as changing the layout and hazards of the prison.

• ELUDE The Death That Follows, the ultimate assassin and Buddha’s personal bodyguard. She is a constant presence that grows with you and is always a looming threat around the corner if your escape goes haywire.

• FEAST your eyes on a stunning visual landscape full of moody environments and the gore of your fallen foes.
