Solo developer Andrei Fomin is getting ready to unleash a new ASCII-style game called Effulgence RPG, and an Early Access trailer is here to prepare us for the adventure. Appropriate in the context of characters made out of text, enemies can be broken down to their very particles to be used as fodder for forging weapons and gear, and the look of the world fully reflects this novel design sensibility.
You can see how it’s shaping up ahead of its December 2 launch in Early Access below.

If the trailer is anything to go by, Fomin’s big swing at a unique aesthetic really paid off. From the world design to the animations, it all flows together hypnotically.
Here’s more on the game’s features:
- Text-only visuals – the entire game (characters, environments, effects) is built from text symbols.
- Tactical turn-based combat with a PING system that controls turn order and timing.
- Convert enemies into gear – harvest raw parts from defeated foes and print new weapons and items.
- Short satirical dialogues and a slightly absurd, darkly humorous tone instead of a heavy epic story.
- 3D-style globe map built from symbols, with locations gradually unlocking as you progress.
Effulgence is currently up for Wishlisting on Steam, where you can also go ahead and check out a demo.
